A packed newsletter for the start of summer
18th of June, 2024
Moinsen, everyone! π
I’ve got a big new blog post for you and another one is coming in a couple of weeks!
So, what’s been happening since last time?
The fast marathon spring time season has been closed and summer moved in, and with it, ultra running! My training plan has shifted from the fast 3:00 minute intervals to more elevation heavy running, because I have been training for my next highlight of the year, the 106 kilometer, 5,080 meter gain Zugspitz Ultra Trail around Germany’s tallest mountain. Spoiler alert: The race took place last weekend and I am very happy with the results. But more on that when I’ve got the blog post ready – it will be a big one and I’m enjoying writing it very much!
Leading up to it, a lot else has happened.
The sad thing up front, we had to cancel our self-organized 100-miler race due to too few signups. In the end there were just a dozen people who had committed, so we pulled the plug, refunded everyone, changed some things about the concept and set a date for next year.
The changes include the addition of a 50k and a 100k run to the 100-miler (160km) – making the whole thing a lot more inclusive. The website has already been updated and applications are actually flowing in already, even though it’s a year ahead! If that sounds like fun to you, take a look here: www.bremensanktpauli.de – we’d love to celebrate that race with you next year.
If you’ve read my training focused blog post about my first Sub-3 marathon race, you know that intervals on the bike played a big role in the success of it. Will long easy bike rides therefore also help with training for a long ultra trail race? Possibly! So my wife Sophie and I used a day on which we had none of our four kids to take care of to bike Hamburg’s “Grüner Ring”, the 100 km ring around the city, which I’ve run in one go before.
It took a few years, but I have now finally agreed to take one for the team so my wife and our kids get to have a new fuzzy friend at home. A dream is coming true for them. And I’m actually looking forward to it myself. Get ready for some dog content in the near future! Obviously we selected a specific breed that’s able to run long distances. π
Exciting!
In the meantime, I used a free weekend to somewhat spontaneously go to Switzerland and run a marathon race in the city of Basel. The special thing about it: Since Basel is located right at the border of the three countries, you get to run across multiple borders and set foot in Switzerland, France, and Germany during one single marathon race!
Conditions were right to my preference (a bit too hot for most others), the people friendly, the cost of living insane (what’s going on there, Switzerland?!), and my race result much better than I planned: 3:13:58, placing 10th overall out of around 200 participants.
Ever since I published my blog post about my goals for 2024, people who read it tell me I should read Yuval Noah Harari’s book “Homo Deus”. So now I have. And it’s great and resonated a lot with what I’m thinking. Are you keen to find out why? Here are my thoughts about it:
And now here’s the finale, the one big new blog post I’ve got ready for you and which is the main reason for sending out this newsletter, as always.
Going stronger than ever before, this year’s edition was a real highlight. We couldn’t have had much worse weather, especially for June, but that increased the camaraderie and made it even more into an adventure we all likely won’t forget so soon. It’s been a real blast to guide those 40-50 runners around Munich and have at least seven beers with them – alcoholic or not. The Munich breweries are so special and their products so good, I highly recommend joining us in 2025! Find out if it’s something you might enjoy by reading the blog post now.
I hope you enjoyed this newsletter. If so, recommend signing up to a friend! Until next time, all the best to you all.
